Phones Do Not Cause Gas Cylinder Explosions, this is What Causes it

The saying “Do not carry your phones into the kitchen when the gas is on” is a very popular saying in many Nigerian homes today. You have probably received a lot of messages warning you to keep your phone away from the kitchen so as not to cause an explosion. There are also videos and pictures that have been posted online to prove that phones can cause gas explosions, but the question is do phones really cause gas cylinder explosions?

For an explosion to occur with a gas cylinder, there must be a spark or a connection of a flammable material with oxygen being exposed to heat. How many phones produce enough heat that can go as far as causing a spark? None. When you really take a look at it, you notice that this kind of news are only shared online as you don’t seem to see anyone who can give you a detailed account of how receiving phone calls, or taking phones into the kitchen actually caused an explosion.

The reason for this is that people share this kind of news as a way of ensuring safety in the homes and also because gas stations sometimes advice that phones should be switched off when customers are coming to the station. However, there is no record of explosions of gas stations that have been linked to mobile phones. Does this mean that everyone who goes to the gas station switches off their cellphone? No. Why some of these petrol stations ask that phones be switched off is to avoid distractions like people crashing into the station or hitting other cars.

Experiments have been carried out by some scientists to test the likely possibility of phones causing explosions. However, this experiments came out negative. The news about the misconception of phones causing gas explosions have been spread round, but people still believe that there is a link to phones and gas explosions. Now the question is what then causes gas explosions mostly in the kitchen?

One connection phones can have with gas explosions is the distraction it causes in the kitchen. A lot of people get carried away in the kitchen when receiving calls. Sometimes these victims of gas explosions might have switched on the gas without lighting it, continued their phone calls then along the line light up the gas when its contents have already circulated to an extent hereby causing an explosion.

There are also cases of people who light up the gas and forget to place the pot containing what they want to cook on it. This can in turn lead to something hazardous in the house. This is a more suitable reason why phones should not be operated around the kitchen.
